NYC VISTA


About NYC VISTA:

The NYC VISTA Program supports NYC government agencies to lift New Yorkers out of poverty by increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of each agency.

VISTA members serve at New York City government agencies (known as host sites) full-time from July 31, 2023 to August 2, 2024 to address critical city issues related to poverty by engaging in capacity-building work. Capacity building refers to tasks and activities that create, expand or strengthen the systems and processes that help an organization carry out its anti-poverty work. These tasks and activities include the transfer of knowledge/skills, products, and relationships.

Direct service refers to activities that immediately address a client’s needs, e.g. tutoring or providing meals at a soup kitchen. VISTAs do not do direct service. 

NYC VISTA member activities can include program development and delivery; performance measurement; research and data evaluation; community engagement, outreach, and promotion; and partnership expansion and development.

NYC VISTA Application Process Overview:

Step 1: Apply Online

  • When finalized, a list of available NYC VISTA positions will be posted below. When you click any of the links, you will be re-directed to its Service Opportunity Listing where you'll be able to apply for the position.

Step 2: Applicant Phone Screen

  • A member of the NYC VISTA Recruitment team will review your application once it is received. You will be notified within 2 weeks of applying whether you have been invited to move forward to a phone screen.

  • The phone screen is an initial interview to determine your fit and eligiblity for our NYC VISTA program and will be approximately 15-20 minutes in length. Please note that phone screens are not specific to the position(s) you applied for in your application.

Step 3: Host Site Supervisor Interview 

  • Within 3 weeks after you have participated in a phone screen, you will be notified whether you have been selected to move forward to an interview with the supervisor of the VISTA position you've applied for.

  • If you have been selected to interview, the host site will reach out to coordinate the interview with you. Interviews will be conducted by either phone call or video chat. Not in person.

  • You may be selected to interview for up to three positions based on how many positions you applied to on my.americorps.gov. 

Step 4: Candidate Offers

  • Within 3 weeks of participating in a host site supervisor interview, you can expect to hear if you have been offered a position.

  • If a supervisor you interviewed with would like to offer you a position, a member of the NYC VISTA Recruitment team will extend the offer to you. You will have three business days to either accept or decline.

  • If you do not accept or decline the offer within three business days, the offer may be sent to another candidate.


NYC VISTA Member Benefits:

  • NYC VISTA Members: Living allowance of up to $29,043.56 (pre-tax) for 12 months of service

  • NYC VISTA Leader: Living allowance of up to $31,483.68 (pre-tax) for 12 months of service (Note: VISTA Leaders must have successfully completed one year of AmeriCorps or Peace Corps) 

  • Members receive a MetroCard for commuting to and from service

  • Choice of Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $6,895 or end-of-service cash stipend

  • VISTA Virtual Member Orientation (VMO), On-Site Orientation and Training (OSOT), and ongoing professional development

  • Limited health care benefits, including routine dental care and limited vision services

  • $750 settling-in allowance, if relocating more than 50 miles

  • Loan Forbearance and deferment for qualified student loans during active service; interest paid on qualified loans if successfully completes program

  • Non-competitive eligibility for a federal government position, if qualified

  • Childcare assistance, if qualified, during active service

NYC VISTA Requirements:

What are the requirments to serve as a NYC VISTA member?

  • Must be U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or Lawful Permanent Resident of the United States

  • Have successfully obtained a High School diploma or its equivalent prior to the start of the program

  • Agree to and pass a criminal background check

  • Ability to serve full time for the program term (generally M-F 9AM - 5PM)

*Note updated policy: As of May 3, 2015, VISTA Members and Leaders may hold legal part-time employment that is unrelated to their assigned project and that does not interfere with their service or service hours. To learn more, visit the VISTA Campus.
