Fellowship Program

The NYC Service Fellowship Program is a one-year program that provides a unique opportunity to obtain practical government experience in the areas of volunteerism and service at the City level. The centerpiece of the program is a full-time professional work experience at NYC Service as Program “Coordinators," to engage local residents in volunteerism, build partnerships to deepen and expand volunteer and service programs. This is a one-year program focused on a full-time work experience in City government.

2024-2025 Fellowship Program Applications are now open! Carefully review the open Service Coordinator positions for the 2024-2025 fellowship year by clicking each listed below BEFORE you apply to the program. Positions include the following:

Application Instructions

Applications must be submitted by 5 PM on March 31st, 2024.

You can close out the application at any time and resume working on the application by clicking on the link you received via email.  However, once you click “submit” you will no longer have access to your application. Incomplete applications will NOT be reviewed by NYC Service.

Read the following instructions carefully before beginning the application. 

  1. Begin an application online. After entering your email address, you will receive a link via email that will take you to the online application system.   
  2. Review all open positions and be prepared to rank them based on your interest (all positions posted above).
  3. Prepare to attach the following documents: 

  • Transcript:  Attach an unofficial transcript for all colleges attended, reflecting the most recent semester’s work.  If offered the Fellowship, an official transcript and proof of graduation will be required. 

  • Resume:  Attach a one-page resume.  Please be sure that this resume accurately reflects your recent work experience (paid and unpaid) and any school or community/volunteer activities.  Include the names of all organizations, the title of your positions and the dates of participation. 

  • Personal Statement: In an essay, not to exceed 750 words, describe your reasons for applying to the NYC Service Fellowship Program.  We are interested in finding out what you can contribute and gain from this professional work experience.  The objective of this essay is to provide us with a better understanding of you and your interest in public service, as well as how you will relate to the NYC Service community.  You may want to draw upon past experiences in leadership, community service, team efforts, etc. that have significantly impacted your career goals.  Do NOT recount your resume.  The essay must be saved as a PDF or Word Document with your name on each page. If you exceed the specified word limit, your application will not be reviewed.

  1. References: You will be asked to submit contact information of two references and ensure the information is accurate.  At least one reference must be a current or former supervisor. Please DO NOT request recommendation letters from two professors. The reference should be able to assess your personal initiative, motivation, and suitability for a fellowship in the public sector. References will be contacted if the candidate advances in the process. 

  2. Submit: You will receive a confirmation email from NYC Service stating that your application is complete. If you do not receive a confirmation email after submitting, please email nycservice@cityhall.nyc.gov with the subject line: Fellowship Submission Confirmation.

Compensation: NYC Service Coordinators in our program are paid a taxable stipend of $55,326 and receive a choice of paid health insurance plans (vision and dental not included).

Administrative Days: NYC Service Coordinators receive 12 “administrative days” (i.e. paid days off) during their time at NYC Service (one day for each month they work). Administrative days may be used for any requested days off (e.g. vacation, sick days, etc.).

Eligibility

  • NYC Service Coordinators, in addition to meeting all other stated requirements (please see Fellowship Eligibility here), should have one year of service-related experience (e.g. national service, volunteer experience/community service) and it does not need to be consecutive. Priority will be given to those who have completed a national service program, i.e. AmeriCorps State and National, VISTA, NCCC, etc. for some positions.
  • The experience is also designed for recent graduates, therefore individuals no more than four years out of an undergraduate or graduate program are strongly preferred.
  • If accepted in the NYC Service Fellowship Program, please note that you must be a City resident or become a City resident within 90 calendar days of the date of appointment.
